Positive IUD Story/Experience!

Hi yall, I wanted to share my really positive IUD experience since I was freaked out by only ever reading the “horror” stories. Of course everyone’s experience is different, and this is not to downplay the experience of folks who really struggled with insertion, etc. But just to offer another perspective to show you that it isn’t always some horrible, scary thing.

I got my IUD (Mirena) inserted at a women’s health clinic. I had to go in for an initial consultation, where I asked about their pain management options. They did tell me to take ibuprofen the night before and morning of, but they also offered a numbing shot into my cervix and also spread numbing gel on the measuring probe they use before final insertion. I was also prescribed misoprostol to take the night before and day of.

The insertion went really well. I was nervous of course. The most pain I felt was the initial numbing shot in my cervix, which felt like a sharp pain and pressure. Afterwards, I could not feel the tenaculum at all, and only had a cramping feeling during the measuring and insertion.

That day I had some painful cramping which a heating pad and ibuprofen took care of. I had mild cramping for about 4-5 days on and off, and bled (medium flow) for about the same.

Now I am adjusting to my “normal” cycle and am slowly bleeding less and less each period. I just want folks to know that it CAN be totally not that bad! I was scared because I had read so much about the awful pain. I am lucky that my clinic offered numbing options—be brave and ask about pain management and numbing! Try to find a clinic that does pain management. I promise it will all be okay!!
